I do not want to name the villain since today is the subject that everyone is talking about, but I do know about the crisis, a crisis in which many people, doctors and health personnel, transporters, police and soldiers and many others are risking their life, some fighting directly with the disease and others trying to keep services running.

Potential damages are being evaluated every day, many countries will see their health systems collapse, but the economy cannot stop at the risk that the damages will be even more serious.

Many companies risk their existence, if businesses stop and the payment chain is cut and for the first time the risk is global, those who do not have a broad back are in a very bad position.

Each company is a world and lives in a unique reality, the strategy will be unique too.

If your company has CSR management systems in place, that is, if it is systematically socially responsible, it is surely well prepared for the moment, cause CSR manages risk control and in the relationship of your company with its stakeholders.

The main advantage is that there are established communication channels with your stakeholders, this will allow a better relationship during the crisis, you will know what measures to take to keep your clients reasonably satisfied, the relationship with suppliers and business allies will be one of understanding, with your personal there will be understanding and collaboration, with competitors there may be association and  collaboration and from your community,  social license.

Other advantages are that the company has worked in innovation, in efficiency in the use of resources and has decreased its fixed costs, more efficient processes with fewer resources used, less waste, perhaps even with its own generation of renewable energy.

The processes that favor innovation and creativity, the collaborative and participatory staff that will contribute with ideas and solutions, alliances with other organizations, all contribute to overcome the crisis and find opportunities.

Crises, to repeat the cliche, bring out the best or the worst in us.

Will not everyone behave well with you? Will many disappoint you? It may be, but surely when this crisis ends, and it will, you will remember who helped you, who failed you and will know who to trust in the future.

Others will also remember how you faced the worst.

I know of a company that increased the price of masks and alcohol gel by 500%, and I know of another that is giving away kits to those who need it, when this passes, I will remember who is who.

As our business community may already know, in the month of May, we will be organizing our first event, THE BIZZ EUROPE, in the beautiful city of Lisbon, where we also have the support of the Lisbon Tourism Visitors & Convention Bureau. Then at the end of August we will meet in Toronto for THE BIZZ AMERICAS, which is supported by the Office of Government Tourism in Toronto. Finally, as far as awards ceremonies go, in November we will be closing the year with a finishing touch in the exclusive city of Doha, Qatar, where we will organize THE BIZZ AMEA. At this event we are pleased to inform you that the Qatar National Tourism Council (QNTC) has offered their full support. For that reason, Nicolas Caffaro (Director of International Relations) and I, have been invited to Doha to launch this event as part of a press conference organized by the QNTC. We are sure that the Qatar event will ultimately be one of the most popular events of the year.

I also want to remind you that since 2019 we launched our product, the WORLDCOB Trust Seal—a business trust seal—where all members can make use of its exclusive benefits at no cost.

In addition, I also invite companies that have not challenged themselves to become socially responsible, to perform a self-assessment of their circumstances. Then they will be able to evaluate their current situation related to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) regarding the possibility of receiving a CSR certificate through our WORLDCOB-CSR certification process.

Finally, given the world events we have seen in recent weeks, I would like to say that WORLDCOB is in favor of integration and above all Globalization (in addition to cultural exchange). For this reason, we promote this view among all our members. Each year, representatives from dozens of countries gather with us at our events, where they share their experiences and forge ties, each determined to care for and improve the world in which we live. So, from WORLDCOB we raise our voice so that every international conflict can be resolved, and we continue to think of strategies to make this, our world, a much better place.

1.What goals does WORLDCOB pursue?

The main mission of WORLDCOB is to promote business development worldwide. This makes pursuing 3 objectives: motivate and stimulate companies with our recognition of business excellence, THE BIZZ; promote socially responsible business culture in the world; generate business tools (networking) among our members.

2. In these fifteen years, what achievements have marked a milestone in the organization?

The celebration of the 10 years in Hawaii was very special, however I think the main milestones have been when we reached the number of 3500 member companies in 130 countries ’; When the WORLDCOB-CSR certification was launched in 2011 in Rome and precisely now in San Francisco that we present a new product at the service of members and commerce in general, the WORLDCOB TRUST SEAL (WTS), international seal of business confidence, a tool to build trust and facilitate business.

3. Regarding The BIZZ How was born the idea of ​​recognize business excellence?

The idea stems from the creativity of two great friends, our CEO, Jesús Morán and our Vice President Michael Bellido. They had the idea of ​​motivating and stimulating small, medium and large companies in the world, making them part of an international organization that promotes networking to generate new business among its members. They started very young with this idea and have decidedly led these 15 years of growth of the organization, adding a talented and committed team.

4. What has been the scope of this award worldwide?

In 15 years we have been able to reward more than 3500 companies from more than 130 countries. We have also organized more than 100 ceremonies in the 50 most important cities in the world (Dubai, Paris, New York, Hong Kong, Monaco, Doha, Marrakesh, Rome, Washington, Abu Dhabi, Houston, Venice, Muscat, etc).

Every year we organize 3 awards ceremonies. One in Europe, America and Asia. The next ones will be in Kuala Lumpur (November), Lisbon (May) and Toronto (August).

5.  For companies, what does it mean to be socially responsible?

A socially responsible company is one that creates wealth but is responsible for the social and environmental impact of its activities. Trying to make this impact positive and when it isn’t, trying to mitigate or compensate for it.

Each company is a separate world, the way of working is by analyzing interest groups, defining communication channels and identifying needs and expectations. CSR seeks relationships of reciprocity, collaboration, creation of shared and sustainable value. Donations and philanthropy are good and necessary things but they are not CSR.

I think it is necessary today for all types of companies since there is a change, the New Management, which recognizes the importance of managing the company with reference to the stakeholders and looking for win-win relationships responsibly.

Technological changes, mainly internet and digitalization, globalization, are changing the relationship between consumers and businesses, with more judicious choices and the requirement for companies to justify their existence beyond the fact of giving profits. The almost “big brother” transparency makes everything known in the end, so it is better to comply with laws and regulations and do what is said to be done.

Certifications in general help generate TRUST. These assure us that a third party endorses (according to a certain standard and audit procedures) that a company does what it says it does.

The fact that a company obtains the WORLDCOB-CSR: 2011.3 certificate indicates that it has passed a WORLDCOB audit and that our organization has a reasonable conviction that the company complies with the requirements established by the standard.

6. What is the impact of having a CSR policy?

Defining a CSR Policy is to assume a public commitment, mainly with employees, society and the environment. It helps build trust in stakeholders and provide a purpose for employees. The impact is certainly important as it has to do with the identity, the DNA of the company and the criteria with which management decisions are made.

7. In what way can medium and small companies benefit from these parameters? What benefits does it generate?

The benefits can be greater positioning and visibility of the company, opportunity for new business, innovation spaces, increased productivity, less turnover and absenteeism, customer loyalty, savings, license to operate, risk control, among many others. University of Toronto by BOB Willard, on average, in addition to the great intangible benefits there are potentially 7 concrete benefits of CSR:

1. Income increase 9%
2. Energy consumption savings 75%
3. Less waste 20%
4. Less inputs 10%
5. More productivity 2%
6. Less returns, defects 25%
7. Reduction of risks

According to these averages, SMEs can increase their profit up to 51% in 3 to 5 years, while large companies up to 81%.

As pioneers in CSR certification, what do you consider the biggest challenges facing companies that want to be certified?

It is true that being pioneers forces you to open paths.

The biggest challenge for companies is cultural and behavioral change, that senior management commits to, understand the reasons of CSR, achieve adequate communication with workers to gradually consolidate a collaboration from which both parties benefit. Move from a workers’ struggle – political pattern to rely on a common cause, with understanding and respect.

8. What has been your greatest satisfaction in the field of CSR?

Satisfaction is every day! Every day we see how certified companies commit more, work successfully, earn more money and at the same time meet the expectations of their stakeholders and take care of the environment by helping to improve the world.

They share their achievements and we communicate them on our networks, to show that it is possible to succeed by doing things well and is not the exception but the rule.

On a personal level it is very enriching to collaborate in the working groups and in the summits of the Global Compact, of the GRI, of FAO, with governments and other organizations, on behalf of our members.

In 2015 I had the opportunity to work with a team from The British Standards Institution reviewing the edition of the third version of our standard, the current one.

But the most enriching is the possibility of meeting businessmen from all over the world, charismatic leaders, from different cultures and from all areas.

It is a happiness to have a job in which we are doing things well and collaborating with others to do things well.

9. What other services and products does WORLDCOB offer companies?

We have three types of membership, Silver, Gold and Platinum with different benefits. Between them

Main services include Bizz training, Corporate Image Consulting, Intermediation in international business, CSR Consulting and Certification and the new WORLDCOB TRUST SEAL (WTS) product to promote relationships of trust.

For example, in the last 2 years we have made more than 500 videoconferences with entrepreneurs, advising free of charge in CSR and we have organized dozens of free CSR workshops in different countries with accumulated participation of more than 2000 entrepreneurs.

In many cases collaborating with the academic sector and helping the bonding.

10. What projects or events are coming for the remainder of the year?

At this time, while we make the note we are in San Francisco in one of our most important international events with the presence of more than 80 companies from around the world, with networking, workshops, coaching and a gala dinner where THE BIZZ Award will be delivered , which is the most important business award in the world.

Then we will have a similar event in Kuala Lumpur in November, where we expect even greater assistance.

Meanwhile, we are doing about 10 free videoconferences every week, advising on CSR and we have scheduled a few on-site and virtual audits to do before the end of the year.

11. Finally, what is the long-term vision for WORLDCOB?

Our vision is to be the largest and most international business association in the world, to reach 10,000 members with representation in 200 countries, all companies with proven business excellence. Also, add more and more companies to the culture of CSR and thus collaborate with the SDGs and a better world.

WORLDCOB is not only an award organization, WORLDCOB is more than that. WORLDCOB is an international chamber of commerce that promotes networking among its 3,500 members and promotes Corporate Social Responsibility through its International Standard.

WORLDCOB can definitely help you grow your business. Most of you take advantage of the different services we offer your business, but today, on this special occasion, we are officially launching a new service, a world premiere.

WTS is a Business Trust Seal, created by WORLDCOB, so that, through this process, we can verify the legal existence of a company and its commercial operations for others to see. We greeted each other and with a smile, he told me that I have a wonderful job and that he would like to have a job like mine.

I said that I agreed because I’m convinced that I have one of the best jobs in the world!

I am naturally a very grateful person and I feel very fortunate about my (now long) life and sometimes it’s good to say it. And what better opportunity than to take advantage of the newly created “Director’s corner” space to tell you how happy I am to have a job that I greatly enjoy.

I love traveling and since joining WORLDCOB (13 years ago) I have had to travel around the world visiting places that I might never have known in any other way on the four continents. We have organized more than a hundred events (awards, networking, workshops etc.) and in each place, I have tried to stay for some extra days to visit and share with others.

As always, we try to provide a superior level of quality to WORLDCOB members, so our events are always at the best hotel in each country. In addition, we want the experience of the entrepreneurs to be complete, taking the opportunity to visit the best tourist destinations, such as Cuzco and Machu Pichu, the Caribbean, Disneyland, Taj Mahal, Morocco, and the United Arab Emirates, … just to name a few.

My wife Carolina and I traveled to many of these events, taking advantage of the opportunity to experience unforgettable walks in Europe, USA, and the Arab Emirates. To this, I need to add the endearing experience of all the years we live in Houston while we oversaw the company’s headquarters.

To these trips, I must add one of the most enriching virtues of my work, which is sharing and getting to know the members of the Confederation, many of those who travel to the events accompanied by their families. Successful entrepreneurs from different countries, in all fields, different cultures and ways of doing things, different realities, charismatic individuals, and natural leaders committed to quality and Corporate Social Responsibility, which is what WORLDCOB promotes.

Regarding Corporate Social Responsibility, this is my specialty in this organization, that motivates and satisfies me each day to be working for a noble cause such as this. It allows me to earn a living by promoting CSR and helping entrepreneurs committed to integrating sustainability into their management systems and supporting Sustainable Development Goals.

I have been able to advise and cooperate closely with more than 500 companies, from small businesses, universities, NGOs, medium and large companies both public and private and I have learned a lot during this process.

Representing WORLDCOB at the United Nations Global Pact, the Global Reporting Initiative, and the FAO summits and negotiating and signing agreements with other institutions and even governments to promote CSR are experiences that have left a deep impression on me.

And finally, I must say that the WORLDCOB staff members are wonderful. A great virtue that I have always recognized is our CEO, Jesus, for knowing how to surround himself with excellent collaborators and individuals. I truly feel that we are part of a committed family⁠—and in my case⁠—especially the group of Directors. This group of friends with whom, at each meeting, we renew our deep commitment and friendship.

We can say that we are completely satisfied, not only with the high number of participants we received in this edition, but also because we had the presence of different International Ambassadors in the Netherlands, among which were the notable Ambassadors of: Brazil, Ecuador, India, Malaysia, Panama, Poland, Portugal, and South Africa. We thank them for their presence and willingness to recognize the achievements of the companies in their respective countries.

In this edition, as an additional benefit that we are innovating for our Elite Members, Dr. Raghavan Seetharaman, GENERAL DIRECTOR of the Doha Bank of Qatar, had the opportunity to offer at the award ceremony, a talk entitled “Sustainable Development in the Digital Age”, where he exposed the needs that exist on a worldwide scale to use digital strategies to boost business, as well as their benefits, challenges, and future expectations. Thank you Dr. Raghavan for accepting our invitation to be our Keynote Speaker.

On another note, I would like to tell you that, some weeks ago, we were invited as Hosted Buyers to the IMEX fair held in Frankfurt. This is the largest event in the world for the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) sector; there we had the opportunity to meet with different companies and suppliers in different categories and at the end of the day, we received requests from more than 40 countries interested in hosting the next THE BIZZ awards. This positive outcome is the reason why we are satisfied by the achievements obtained in these meetings, and we are sure that we will have more surprises to announce in the coming months.

First, I’d like to thank all members who attended to one of our Regional Directors, Mr. Alarbi Sefiane, when he made official visits on behalf of WORLDCOB in Senegal, Côte d’ivoire, Qatar, and Oman. All this in order to learn more about the current situations of the companies, and to inform them and/or remind them of the benefits that we offer through our membership services. The truth is that it has been very comforting to note the excellent attention and interest that Mr. Alarbi received.  These actions reaffirm our commitment to continue planning these visits that will allow us to continue expanding our business network.

Second, through WORDLCOB we have developed an Internal Auditing course in Corporate Social Responsibility based on the WORLDCOB-CSR: 2011.3 standard, created by our Director of Quality and CSR, Daniel Javier. The goal is that previously certified companies can train their staff and empower them to help maintain the policies required by this international standard. The first workshop was held in the city of Lima, Peru with our “Lima Tours” collaborator, a leading tour operator in the tourism market of the country.

In other news, WORLDCOB has received an IMEX invitation to attend the most important Trade Exhibition event in the world as Buyers.  This Trade Exhibition will be held in Frankfurt on May 21 to 23. I am sure that the networking opportunities generated by this event will be very beneficial for all members.

Finally, I’d like to say that we’re at the threshold to begin our first THE BIZZ Europe 2019. This event will take place on May 13 and 14 at the Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam Hotel.  This hotel has a restful setting between two canals in the heart of the city. In addition, The Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam boasts of a rich and vibrant history that includes a convent constructed in the 15th century, royal apartments, and Amsterdam’s City Council.

We are very happy and eager to receive all the companies that have confirmed their participation in THE BIZZ EUROPE 2019.

After the signing of the PGNU, we remained committed to be a Socially Responsible company and to promote CSR by understanding the strategic role that this represents in international markets.

The next step was to consider how we could help our members to become companies committed to the culture of Corporate Social Responsibility and promote the benefits it offers for entrepreneurs.

With this objective in mind, we began to incorporate CSR issues into our free Business Excellence workshops and—not content with that—we began to organize Corporate Social Responsibility meetings in different Latin American countries with prominent international panelists.

A new stage was to develop a Standard that—at the service of our members— would help them in an accessible way to become Socially Responsible. In this way, the WORLDCOB-CSR standard was born, which has proven to be an excellent tool for companies to measure their level of commitment with CSR and adjust its practices to the international sustainability standards; to date, more than 300 companies around the world have been certified under this standard.

In the last two years, we have done more than 500 free pre-evaluations with companies around the world, providing them with a CSR analysis and advising them to advance in their integration into this management system.

Simultaneously, we began to participate actively in the global CSR forums, to participate in the global meetings of the PGNC and local (USA) and GRI, of which we are currently Golden Community Members. In 2015, we revised our WORLDCOB-CSR Standard: 2011 with The British Standards Institution.

Corporate Social Responsibility has become a key element in the planning of business objectives, taking giant leaps on a worldwide scale. Companies have been adjusting to this new reality, a society with other expectations about the role of organizations in their contribution to sustainability, as well as customers who demand products and services from companies attached to CSR each day.

In 1975, only 17% of the company’s assets in S&P 500 were intangible, quantifying the difference between the book value shown on the balance sheets and the market values​ (share price). In 2010, that value was 80%. This assessment of the company by its stakeholders (mainly investors) marks a difference which is difficult to explain. However, it has to do with the image, prestige, human capital, social capital, sustainability, and ultimately how well you can tell “the story” of the company, going from storytelling to story doing.

CSR offers a future of collaboration and understanding between company and employees, changing the struggle for shared value; ending the outsourcing of environmental costs; the collaboration of all to globally manage the climate challenge; the participation of the private sector with another role in the construction and development of society, collaborating with the public; doing more research, innovation of good practices and new sustainable products; and fighting to end corruption and illegality.

The future is optimistic from this point of view; the challenge is to build this trust based on dialogue, understanding, tolerance, respect and good communication and it is fundamental that we, as consumers, exercise our “power” of rewarding those who do things well and “censoring” those who do not.

At WORLDCOB we are proud to be doing it well and continuing to do it well.

I am writing to you to express my joy and satisfaction as we close out this year. Let me begin by sharing with you the latest results of THE BIZZ AMEA event held in Dubai. It was simply spectacular and exceeded our greatest expectations. We were privileged to have the participation of more than 100 Companies from 50 countries around the world. This gave us the opportunity to interchange experiences and network with more than 400 guests who enjoyed a stunning view seated in front of the terrace of one of the most luxurious hotels in the world, the BURJ AL ARAB.

These Companies could prove for themselves why the power of recognition is so important, and this is something that we have been promoting all year long. During the last few weeks, we have received only congratulations for organizing this excellent event including words of appreciation for our Leadership & Recognition workshop led by our Director of Human Development, Nancy Branger.

Do not forget that we have our BIZZTRAINING brand, which allows us to offer coaching services and model workshops to interested Companies that wish not only to train but also to motivate their work teams. Our director, Nancy Branger always does an outstanding job in this department. And not only I but all Companies who have hired her to make use of said services recognize her invaluable contribution.

I would also like to take this opportunity to say that we have already launched THE BIZZ 2018 Awards in three cities: Prague, Miami Beach, and Hong Kong. The registration for Companies who wish to apply for this prestigious award is also open, and the committee has already given us a list of the first winners.

On the other hand, WORLDCOB is working very hard to promote CSR for the past six years by means of CSR meetings. In this way, we earnestly endeavor to incentivize Companies that wish to align their procedures with CSR policies to obtain the WORLDCOB 2011.3 certification.

The Meetings this year convened more than 500 Companies that actively participated in this event, not only by attending but also with their participation on the speaker panel and by answering questions. I am happy to report that more and more companies are interested in CSR.

I wish to thank all who made these Meetings possible, especially the Universities and the speakers for their support and trust. This allowed us to organized events in Bogota, Puebla, Guadalajara, Quito, and Lima.

Before I take my leave, I cannot help but wish that this has also been a good and productive year for you. If it hasn’t been that way, there’s always 2018 just ahead, which can make a difference.
